Spammers Galore

I had to apply for a Tax Credit with Inland Revenue. When I rang them up to find out about the online facility, the link for which I couldn’t find in their website, they told me that they have got rid of that part of the website as they are receiving so many spam registrations every day. They have reverted back to paper based system now and would remain so until the time they equip their online facility with better ways to deal with spammer morons.

I don’t see the point these spammers are trying to drive. Whether it is right or wrong, it is understandable to fill one’s guest book & comments with junk as they get linked back. But to fill up a complicated questionnaire with trash is simply beyond any logic. Crazy guys.

Surprised that a govt dept of such stature would shut down because of spammers. They are sending the wrong signals to the spammers. They should’ve reacted by getting better spam protection and imposing fines and more tax dues on the spammers.

Aha – it seems you have not heard of the problem with the Tax Credit website. This was big news a few months back (and still is from time to time) – although you only tend to hear in-depth analysis of it on the “serious” news shows like BBC Radio 4 Today programme or Newsnight on BBC2. Basically: the problem is that a few months ago (last summer I think) the government discovered that there was major and massive fraud operation going on via the Tax Credit website. It involved thousands of fake registrations and would have defrauded the UK taxpayer of tens of millions of pounds. It was discovered before the damage was too extensive – but the registration facility was suspended as a result. The news carried very little details as to the actual fraud mechanism (understandably so) but they indicated that the attempt was a HUGE one and appeared to be very highly coordinated.
