I have watched the movie… It is an average movie. Vikram, Harris Jeyaraj, Prakashraj and the cameraman have done their part very well. Rest all including Shankar haven’t scored in this movie. For a movie with this kind of story line it shouldn’t take more than 6 months to shoot when you have blocked the major artists just for this movie is my feeling.
Shankar’s sarakku therrnthu pochu…. dum… dum… dum
Annaiyan padam super hit illaa… dum.. dum.. dum…
OnE is right. I have always had this verdict..I hate when people say “Great directors like Maniratnam and Shankar…” Nope. Wrong. Shankar is never that good a director. I dont see any social messages in his movie. And I dont see anything remarkable in him.
Iam just wondering the status of the movie, if Vivek did not appear on screen.
yeah… manirathnam and shankar should not even be used in the same sentence.
I hated boys… anniyan was atleast better in some aspects like OnE points out… but other than that it sucks too.
sorry chakra.. for creating this prejudice

i go with the opinion as well…never felt Shankar is a great director and all that…he is a good director, no doubt about that! He knows how to spin good story with good masala items…he definitely cannot grade him in leagues of Maniratnam or KB or Bharathiraja or Beemsingh or Sridhar or…
We shud not forget the fact that he has stood upright in many of his movies with strengths drawn from balakumaran/sujatha dialogues, ar rehman music, great cinematography
Che, yaaravadhu mani ratnam pathi thappa solvaanga, adhukku badhil pottu time pokkalamnu vandhen.
Guru, great that you have mentioned about Sridhar. IMHO he is one of the all time greats of Indian Cinema.
Shankar 2 varusham pada edukaraar 28 crores selavu for an avg. movie. Sridhar’s “Nenjil Or Alayam” i heard was shot in about 25 days in a single hospital set with just 3 main characters. Padam super hit.
Also Sridhar is a master in conceiving stunning visuals. Just see his “Nenjam Marapadhillai ” song for the movie of the same title. Amazing shots. Its hard to imagine he belonged to a generation earlier than KB.
Chakkara,
Naan indha padathukku verum Rs.15 kuduthu CD-la pathen… and had the luxury of changing channels between the crap movie… and I am regretting that itself! Dhayavu seidhu theater pakkam poga vendam… Maha kandraviyana padam… you cannot sit through it at all!
Agree with others, Shankar is the most hyped commodity in India, probably next only to Aishwarya Rai! He hasn’t shown any traces of a great director in any of his movies, I jus dont understand how ppl mention his name in the same breath as Mani and others… At least all these days, he had ARR to fall back upon… no matter what crap he churned out (like Kadhalan, Jeans, Boys), ARR saved him with great music… Innime adhu kooda illa… Idhoda avanukku sangu thaan… I really hope he doesn’t find a ilicha vaai producer for his next movie… 28 crores just kizhichu potta madiri irukku, cha!!!:(
Sridhar was a master story teller… right from the days of Kalyana parisu and Nenjil oru aalayam… he rocks!:)
Yaam petra inbam, peruga ivvayagam… sendru mazhinthu varuga….
Thanks for all your comments guys.
Interesting to note that an announcement regarding movie screening has led to a review of the movie. Good stuff.
I don’t hold Shankar in very high esteem. One main reason is that the way he reacted to Thuglak’s review of his Kadhalan. Thuglak had blasted the movie and strongly condemned Shankar for denigrating the office of Governor. Whether Governors are immune from criticisms is another topic, but an artist should have the maturity to accept criticisms in his own way. Instead, Shankar chose to abuse the reviewer in a way that I couldn’t comprehend. After all, Kadhalan was Shankar’s second movie. From that point, I never had any respect towards Shankar.
My personal opinion on his character apart, I have to admit that I have enjoyed quite a few of his movies – except Boys & Kadhalan. Be it BGMs, songs, dialogues or cast, the end product comes out as a Director’s creation and whether we like it or not, he is the leader of the team that delivers. I could never consider him in par with Mani or KB or Sridhar, although the media often describes him that way. Well, its media’s creation. After all, don’t the media compare Sania with Sharapova or Steffi? That said, Shankar is not a person who could be rubbished off. Perhaps, his next movie would tell whether his ‘sarakku’ is really over.
Remember R.V.Udayakumar? He delivered quite a few hits. But all of his stories would be on the same lines.. a village background, honest hero who would be worshipped by the surrounding 18 pattis, a test for honesty, triumph of justice, nice lyrics (his own), good songs by IR, few dishum-dishums, subham. He tried the same stuff with all the heroes and once that round is over, he is no where to be seen. Perhaps, if Shankar continues like this, he would go the R.V.Udayakumar way.
ioiio asked me to remove the post. But I chose to leave it as such coz it is very rare to see a Tamil movie being screened in some parts of UK – especially in towns like Sheffield, Bristol etc. In fact, I have never watched a Tamil movie in a theatre in UK. So, when you screen a Tamil movie in such towns, even if it is T.Rajendar’s Veerasaamy, there would be some reasonable crowd to watch it. Apart from the entertainment motive, these occasions often serve as networking opportunities, which are very essential when u live in a place far far away from our kinda people.
btw, I haven’t watched Anniyan yet. Dunno when I would be watching.
Naan solla vantha matter’a…ioiio solitaan…
superb movie.vikram-i have no words to praise his acting-well done mate!!every bit of this movie is simply superb.every frame has been meticulously planned and well presented.another feather in shankar’s cap.good team work.
as everybody said, his movies clearly shows that, he is unable to create a character of his own. But, shankar’s thinking towards social activities, purifying the environment are good.
Can anyone tell me the Shankar’s reaction towards Thuglak’s review of his Kadhalan?
The character that Vikram has played is a brahmin who has two sides in his life. The naive one and the one who is self-confident and seeks a bloody revenge. Shankar should have chosen Kamal to play the role as he is the best actor suited to play both a positive and negative role at the same time. Case in point – Indian, Aalavanthaan and also Oru Kaithiyin Dairy where he plays an innocent victim in the first half and a revenge seeks one in the second half. Also, there was no need for a heroine in the movie as the naive one is protrayed as some one who cannot impress a girl and the violent one is protrayed as some one who is more keen on thrashing the bad guys than singing and dancing around with a pretty girl. This movie should have been directed by some one like Bharathiraja who has directed thrillers like Tick Tick Tick, Oru Kaithiyin Dairy and (maybe) Sigappu Rojakkal. On the whole Shankar has a mess.
READ ur comments. Come on u ppl r praising MANI RATNAM so much .SHANKAR is equally great. After all he was the person who brought graphics to indian cinema. His screenplay is more convincing than mani ratnam.he is able to bring the charcters appear like real time entities. His film dialogues are million times better than manis films.and u ppl r tellin shankar is takin lot of time 2 tak his films. If he is able 2 deliver classy films no matter even if he takes 4 yrs its ok.Aftr all how much time does mani ratnam take for a film?SHANKAR is a prodigy. I enjoyed evry bit of ANNIYAN.He always delivers a social message in his films. We got 2 accept that we indians even aftr seein his films do keep involving in acts like corruption. So it is not SHANKARs fault that he takes such films. It is upto us to view his films and become good.
Its really a comedy that u people r praising mani and blasting shankar..can u tell a hit of mani in recent times all flops …he also sticks to one area patriotism .u cannot see any comedy or fun in his movies.it will be always very serious with people delivering one or two dialogues…the good thing about is his visual sense be in songs or scenes, lighting, angles simply amazing …
Now take Shankar if u go and watch his movies u cannot blame him spending more money ..He justifies everything with his stunning visuals…He is the better one with the outcome of stunning visuals .Take kadhalan even the movie is not good (but better than yuva or dilse) u can not expect more than a visual like mukabula or any song in that movie…Even in the scenes also he concentrates more on each and every shot which makes the scene more beauty….
He is the person who visualize better than any indian directors ..take songs some songs as example like
chikku bukku rayilu-gentleman , mukabula -kadhalan , mudalvane -mudhalvan , kannodu-jeans , egiri -boys , telephone-indian ,aiyangaru -anniyan..Can u just tell me one better song than these in visuals …everybody cannot do a big budget movie…ask bharathiraja or balachander definitely they cannot make a stunning visuals like this..
everybody has their own strengths and weakness
everybody has their own style and
everybody is shining…combinations have to work properly……
next the bigboss shivaji is coming and definitely it will show his talent once again….and moreover anniyan is a better entertainer than any recent maniratnams movies….
