Whey hey... my comments links are up after 3 days, just when I was thinking about switching to something more stable. The only hitch in that attempt is, I would be losing all the comments for my previous entries, which I don't want to. Should there be a way to port comments, hmmmm...... the wish list is endless.

Here, there, where, everywhere... I was looking at the sky in all the directions every few minutes yesterday attempting to see Mars with the naked eye. All I managed was to see was the one pictured here. No probs anyway, there is always a next time, though the next time is 60,000 years away.
Courtesy Sobig worm which seems to have taken a new avtar, my Yahoo! Inbox is filled up with e-mails with 'untouchable' attachments. I am deleting about 40-50 mails every hour. Good that Yahoo! diverts them all to the Bulk mail folder. Thought the worm has died but it seems its getting more active now.
How many, how many times this is gonna happen and what are we gonna do? Heart bleeds for Mumbaikars!
BBC reported that in view of the thaw in relations with Pakistan, Indian government appreciably has avoided any statement from official sources blaming Pakistan for the blasts. I hate this restraint rubbish. If the relations were not as good as it is now, Indian government would see Pakistani hand even in a bicycle accident. It stinks!!
Monday is a Bank holiday in UK and hence it is a three day weekend. With pages of assignments to write for the B-School, this long weekend is no fun. Already I have a stiff neck as a result of continuous writing for 9 hours yesterday. Need to go for a walk and relax a bit before sitting down for the next marathon.
Few years back, I saw a TV programme that showed the unimaginable, filthy places a stamp would pass through before reaching the post office counter for sale. Though I never used to lick a stamp for pasting it, I made sure that I never did that until yesterday. Having bought the required postage at the Post Office last afternoon, I couldn't find any glue or wet sponge nearby. Because of the urgency of the letter in hand, I had to, after lot of hesitation lick the stamp to paste it.
I know that its just a small thing. But ever since I did that, I am keeping my fingers crossed wondering about the after effects of that grand 'lick'. One immediate effect I noticed is that, the high temperatures I was running yesterday has subsidised and it looks like I have got back to normal. :-)
After a long, long time, I have fallen sick. I had high temperature last night and the Paracetamol I took at 2 AM did a reasonably good job until dawn before the fever returned to haunt me again. Despite the bright & sunny weather, I am shivering with the air conditioner doing its bit to increase my agony. Unfortunate thing in this is that I am not in a position to take a day off from work and more unfortunate thing is that my wife has also entered the race as she is having fever on and off.
Only yesterday, Kiruba had blogged that they are having an Intra Family Fever Competition. Ohh… What a surprising coincidence this!
Welchi worm, that generates huge amount of network traffic had a field day at our office yesterday, paralysing our routers and leaving us standstill. Though it didn't cause any damage to any hard disk, it starved us off the Internet access for most part of the day. The frustration without any network connectivity gave a stark reminder as how addicted I have become to the Internet.
I just discovered a cool product Pdf995 that enables you create PDF documents in simple steps. More than the functionality what I like about is, it is downloadable for FREE at www.pdf995.com, which has few other products in its kitty. I was looking for this sort of stuff for a long time as Adobe charges quite an amount even for personal licence. The annoying popup window that pops up every time a PDF is created could be pardoned in view of the neat job it does.
The Music Department of Bournemouth College is conducting Music classes in the evenings. They are ready to accomodate novices like me whose music exploits doesn't go beyond tapping the desk on hearing the Tamil scores. The fees is also affordable but (yes, everything has a BUT) it seems that the beginner's syllabi would cover lot of theory on music which I don't think I would be comfortable with. Also, with so many things I am juggling with at the moment, I wonder whether it is prudent to put my finger in yet another pie. I have time till September 10th to decide which way to go!

Men often become what they believe themselves to be. If I believe I cannot do something, it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe I can, then I acquire the ability to do it even if I didn't have it in the beginning. - Mahatma Gandhi.

N.Chokkan - an accomplished, young Tamil writer and quite a popular figure in Tamil literary circles has just released his third book, titled 'Salman Rushdie'. It is the first book on Rushdie to be written in Tamil, though the Indian born British author has managed to occupy reams of newsprint over the past decade or so. It was my fortune to help the author with bits & pieces information more on the nature of sharing rather than anything else but N.Chokkan had acknowledged the same in the 'Foreword', which I think I don't deserve. Though I am yet to see the book yet, I feel elated to know that my name has made its way to the press in some way after a long time.
Click here to read a sample chapter from the book and here to order the book online. You may also contact the author at nchokkan@broadvision.com with your comments.
One evening, we were just roaming around the streets of Paris when a decent looking lady approached us and asked in clear English whether we were Srilankans living in France. On hearing that we are Indian tourists, the lady introduced herself as a French diplomat and is looking for Srilankans to work at her home and asked us whether we know anyone living in France who would be interested.
After she moved, my wife was wondering what made us appear as domestic servants to that lady. With due respects to those doing those jobs, I chose to look at the incident from a positive angle: "Even when I am walking along the road in some country, people are approaching me with job offers!" Sounds good... ain't it?
It is not unusual in India to find graffiti at public places. But I was surprised to find them at the top floor of Eiffel Tower too. Apparently people wanted to leave a mark there at the top and used their nails (or something sharp) to scratch out the paint and write their names. A casual glance of the names would tell you that many among them were Indians but others were not way behind. There are folks who manage to scribble a quote there as well. Find below an interesting one I picked up there.
Today I performed Gayathri Japam (meditation by reciting the Gayathri Mantra 1008 times) in the morning and it is the fourth consecutive year, I am performing this away from home. Though I have come a long way from being a merry seven year old watching my dad & grand dad performing the rituals along with their peers at the banks of Cauvery river in Kumbakonam, even in urban India these domestic festivals like Gayathri Japam, Avani Avittam (changing the sacred thread) do bring out the colour & life of the culture in India, in case if one feels that the daily routine is monotonous. These are precisely the things that I miss from India and my mind knows very well that this is the price to pay for having your salary paid in Sterling Pounds. Just that my heart is refusing to listen.
Coming back to the topic, it’s a shame that I wasn't able to have my focus entirely on the mantra doing that 2-hour period. Despite the perfect ambience at home, all stupid materialistic thoughts crossed my mind and I really have to struggle hard to concentrate on what I was doing. Things like these do happen and there is no point in whining about it. After all, I am supposed to meditate every day and its quite natural to lack in concentration if I do my duty only once in a year. Let me try to increase the frequency and then check out how I feel this day next year.
1. I wrote to the Customer Services Manager of McDonalds expressing my disappointment over the withdrawal of Veggie Burger. I got a reply mail saying that she couldn't download my e-mail properly and requested me to send it again. I complied with her request and I got an automated message saying that I would get a reply within 72 hours. More than 100 hours has elapsed, I am still to hear anything.
2. McDonalds France do support Vegetarians. They serve yummy Veggie Burgers at their outlets.
3. McDonalds France accept Credit/Debit cards as a mode of payment whereas McD restaurants across UK accept only cash.
Reminding of our good, old Chennai weather, it was 42 degree Celsius (107.6 F) - highest in the history of Paris, when my wife & I landed there on Thursday last. Not the kind of weather one would want during one's honeymoon. Weather Gods decided to show some mercy later on is a different story. It was nevertheless a HOT honeymooon in every sense of the word. :)
On the other day, my wife & I visited Madame Tussauds - the famous wax museum in London. The museum had undergone lot of changes since the time I last visited in September 2000. Amitabh Bachchan was a notable addition and expectedly Asian crowds thronged the place to pose for a snap with him.
Few things that deserve a mention here are
- I couldn't find the wax models of Rajiv Gandhi & P V Narasimha Rao this time. They were there three years ago. Mahatma Gandhi & Indira Gandhi however managed to retain their place. - In general, the number of sporting personalities at Tussauds has come down this time. I remember seeing Viv Richards, Lara & Shane Warne before, but they were missing now. Perhaps due to space constraints they are being displayed in turns. - Saddam Hussein & Yasser Arafat were standing next to each other and only a few bothered to have a look at them. - Wax models of George Bush & Tony Blair were there on a stage with a podium for the visitors to stand between them and pose for a photograph. In the 20 minutes we were there, 90% of the people who went up the stage posed for photographs making obscene gestures at George & Tony.
There are some people who love their work despite the monotonous nature of it. I went to the French Consulate in London with my wife to apply for a visa to France. When my turn came to submit the application, there was this cheerful lady - a cashier who scrutinised the application. As we are making a 4 day trip, we had applied for visa only for that duration. This lady said that in view of the fact that I have already made few trips to the Schengen countries, my wife & I could even apply for visa up to 1 year and hinted about the benefits. She gladly did the run-around for us which is very much unusual there as I did notice the stern faces of two other colleague of hers. An apprehensive visit to the consulate turned out to be a very pleasant one. She really made my day and I could only wish that characters like her are everywhere.
I couldn't help admire the presence of mind or rather the marketing intelligence of the folks at McDonalds. While coming out of the Baker Street Underground station at London, the ad board reads: "Visit McDonalds at 122 B, Baker Street". Nowhere else one could see McDonalds putting up ads with the address of its restaurants. For the uninitiated, "221 B, Baker Street" is the address of Sherlock Holmes & Dr Watson in the stories written by Sir Arthur Canon Doyle. That premises houses a Sherlock Holmes museum now.
This "Golden M" symbol of McDonalds has always been a source of comfort for me in terms of food, whenever I travel away from home in Europe. Being a strict vegetarian, McD has been a saviour on many occasions with its yummy 'Veggie Burger'. On Friday last, I was in for a shock when the girl behind the counter at one of the McD restaurants told that they have stopped doing 'Veggie Burger' anymore. Not that we can't survive without McDonalds in UK, but it is a fact that it would take out the ease of travelling & comfort of quick meal. I plan to write a word to McD expressing my disappointment and asking why they have stopped supporting vegans. even though their website still has details about 'Vegetable Deluxe Burger'. Incidentally, I was part of the team that developed that very website.
