About the Art

The origin of this art can be traced back to the paintings on the walls surrounding temples and palaces depicting mythological and historical events, some 1200 years back. These can still be found, among other places, on the walls of the temple of Lord 'Brahadeeswara' in Thanjavur (Tanjore) in South India. The popularity grew and this style of painting spread to nearby areas.

The modern shape of this style of painting came with the advent of the rule of Sarabojee I and Sarabojee II. During their reign, the use of gold sheets, colours, stones - precious and semi precious came into vogue. The figures were raised and a 3-dimensional effect given to the painting. Since a majority of paintings depict Hindu Gods and are used as items of worship, the artist does not inscribe his name on it.
